Two unveilings by our institute
On Friday, February 10, precisely one hundred years after Johanna Westerdijk’s appointment as first female professor in the Netherlands, the Westerdijk-year was kicked off in a chock-full Academy Building in Utrecht. The afternoon revolved around 100 years of female professors, inspired by Westerdijk’s accomplishments for women in science and for her scientific contributions.
A memorable day for us, with no less than two disclosures!
During the afternoon’s celebrations, director Pedro Crous revealed the new name of our institute: from CBS-KNAW to Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute. The new name now seems obvious. Johanna Westerdijk, after all, has led the institute for more than 50 years and has laid the foundation for the fungal collection as it is today.
The second revelation is also an homage to the scientist Westerdijk. Crous has discovered a new fungus and has named it after her: Westerdykella centenaria. View this wonderful grande dame (a fungus with personality!) that we have included in our collection, below. The description of the new species will appear in the journal Persoonia in June 2017.
