Official opening of the Westerdijk Building by Webmaster Meetings 2017-09-20 11:58:29

August 31 2017 Symposium Week 2017
Location: Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute, Uppsalalaan 8, Utrecht, The Netherlands

Thursday August 31, we welcome you to celebrate the opening of the new laboratory of the Westerdijk Institute, formerly called Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS-KNAW), and part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

New name, new laboratory, but same focus and dedication to enrich and expand the most exceptional microbial biological resource collection of the world. Stronger focus on research to identify fungal secondary metabolites and enzymes in order to address issues of antimicrobial resistance, plant biomass conversion and to develop novel products. The opening of the new laboratory in 2017 will be the starting point of many new and exciting activities.

2017 Is also dedicated to Johanna Westerdijk, the first director of the institute and the first female professor in the Netherlands. We kicked off this special year on February 10 by renaming the CBS-KNAW to the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute. On August 31 we will take it to the next level by revealing a bronze statue of Johanna Westerdijk, planting several specially bred elm trees resistant to Dutch elm disease, and toasting Johanna with a beer specifically brewed for the occasion, Schoone Geest.
